In the monograph dedicated to the artist in 1902, Rémy Salvator tells of La Gandara's curious idea of seeking inspiration from children’s stories. He painted a surprising Beauty and the Beast, and a sweet young girl whose words flowing out of her lips are changed into wonderful roses. He was also haunted by a major figure of Old Spain, Don Quixote, whom he portrayed several times.
